India’s Modi Lands in Malaysia for Defense, Trade Push
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim personally greeted Modi at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, with the two leaders departing together in a symbolic show of bilateral cooperation.
Taking to X, the US social media platform, Modi declared: "I look forward to our conversations and to further strengthening the bonds of friendship between India and Malaysia."
The Indian leader had previously outlined that his Malaysia trip would elevate the nations' Comprehensive Strategic Partnership while expanding collaborative efforts across key industries. Modi emphasized the visit "aims to deepen defense and security ties, enhance economic and innovation partnerships, and expand collaboration into new domains."
Both prime ministers later appeared before a gathering of the Indian diaspora in Malaysia.
A bilateral summit is slated for Putrajaya during Modi's stay, which concludes Sunday. Following their discussions, officials will formalize multiple memoranda of understanding (MoUs) spanning anti-corruption initiatives, seafarer certification standards, and emergency response coordination, the Malaysian Foreign Ministry confirmed.
Additional agreements covering labor cooperation and policy exchanges in semiconductors, healthcare, national security, and vocational training are also on the agenda, ministry statements revealed.
Bilateral commerce between the nations hit $18.59 billion in 2025.
Malaysia hosts roughly 2.75 million residents of Indian heritage—representing approximately 9% of the country's population, according to the High Commission of India.
